Disable “Categories” in the Mail App

With the recent update to iPhone OS 18.2, our iPhones received the new “Apple Intelligence & Siri” functionality.

According to Apple's information page, this feature essentially connects Siri with ChatGPT to provide answers and assist with requests made to Siri. While some people are enthusiastic about using Siri, others are not. If you prefer not to use it, you can disable Siri in the Settings app.

Apple Mail Categories

This is a change I personally do not like. I keep a very short list of emails in my inbox. Unfortunately, the default category view has been changed to “Primary,” which hides some important emails. These emails can only be accessed using the “All Mail” option, which is inconveniently hidden on the far right. Since it is not possible to change the default view from “Primary” to “All Mail,” I decided to disable this new feature.

How to Disable “Categories” in the Mail App

  1. Open the Mail app.

  2. Select the three dots (…) in the upper right corner.

  3. Choose “List View”.

How to Disable Siri in the Mail App (Optional)

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Go to Apps > Mail > Apple Intelligence & Siri.

  3. Disable “Learn from this App” and any suggestion options you wish to turn off.

I am suggesting these changes not because I do not trust Apple with my privacy, but simply because I want to keep things working in the way that suits me best.
